My Writing Routines

Writing is not just a task; it's an art form, where every word is a brush stroke on the canvas of creativity. But what goes on behind those strokes? In this blog post, we explore the engaging and sometimes quirky writing routines that fuel my creativity. If you've ever wondered how different writers approach their craft, you're in the right place. (Please note that the following routines are not every day, I most certainly do not have the time to write in the morning and afternoon each day.)
The Environment
Every writer has a chosen workspace, mine is my desk. I like to look outside when I work so I often sit by a window. I like to add my personal touches to my space as well, I typically light some candles, make a pot of tea, and turn on a playlist for whatever I may be writing. This helps me stay in the zone and to feel immersed in the world of my characters.
My Morning Routine
Before the hustle and bustle of the day I try to do something creative. Whether that be writing a few sentences, or brainstorming. It is always good to do something creative each day to keep that part of our brain active.
My Afternoon Routine
After my other obligations, I like to sit down to do some serious writing if time allows. I light candles, brew some Earl Grey tea, and pop in my headphones. I let everyone know that I'll be writing and put my phone on "Do Not Disturb" and write for as long as I can, sometimes it's 2 hours, other times 20-30 minutes. An important thing to remember is to not beat yourself up if you don't have much time to write, I myself can go weeks (sometimes even a month) without working on my manuscript. There is no shame that life has other obligations, and writing can't always be a top priority.
My Evening Routine
After dinner, I often am in a great headspace to be creative. I'm slightly tired and my inner critic is less vocal, so it is a lot easier to just write and not judge until later. I typically write for 30-45 minutes before I pray the rosary, and I that's usually where I leave it for the night.
Cultivate Your Own Routine
Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting on this incredible path, I encourage you to discover your writing routines. Experiment with what excites you and what works for you. Make writing fun by adding your own twist to it! Play music, light candles, and decorate your space! Be the amazing individual God created you to be!
Happy writing, God bless!
